Overwatch Quickly Becoming Best Selling FPS Ever

Yesterday during Activision-Blizzard’s quarterly financial update we learned that Overwatch now has over 15 million players world wide and the game made roughly $500 million of the roughly $750 million Blizzard made last quarter.

Now, 15 million players doesn’t necessarily mean 15 million copies sold (mostly due to how the Asia market works with PC Bangs). But let’s say it’s a fairly close indicator.
If Overwatch has sold 15 million copies, it would place it in the top 50 for ALL TIME in games sold. It would currently be sitting just behind some Call of Duty titles and Battlefield 3 to be claimed as the top selling FPS franchise at all time. As it stands right now, it would need roughly another 12 million copies sold to pass the all time FPS great, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3.
Blizzard only has 1 other title in the top 50 of all time games, and that is Diablo 3 with 30 million copies sold, which places it at #10 on the list. Considering the success that Blizzard has had with Overwatch in it’s few first months and it’s commitment to games to updating them and pushing them – it’s very possible that Overwatch could in the next year become the top selling FPS game of all time, and even has potential of passing Diablo 3 in that top 10 list.
Pretty amazing for a game that was created from the ashes of a failed project.
