Beta Preview Livestream Recap

by - 9 years ago

We were presented with 2 different live streams from 2 very different perspectives. Ellohime was very engaging with his chat, had prepared questions from Reddit, and talked a lot during the games. Haliynic was a little less engaged with the developers questions wise but had a few good ones but her chat was less populated and had more questions answered from community managers.

We did get a new map revealed that was played called Dorado which we learned early on was a payload map.

Some of the information we learned during both live streams:

  • In game voice communication support
  • No information on how many will be invited into beta
  • Beta stress test weekends will be a reduced version of the game
  • No info on when EU or other regions will start for beta – they are focusing on North America but plan on getting the others up as soon as possible
  • There will be controller support – no information on consoles, committed to PC version
  • Will be in game button emotes for team communication, much like Heroes
  • Kill streaks don’t stay when you get resurrected
  • Skins are being considered and is a highly requested feature – but as of right now the only cosmetic items are portraits, sprays, and skin tints through a progression system.
  • Leveling system for heroes
  • There are new stats at the end of the game that display 4 cards of various stats and who got the best, players can vote for the best – as of right now it’s just fluff.
  • Robot ninja hinted at to be next hero revealed (assuming BlizzCon)
  • FoV slider wasn’t there in this build, but is coming soon
  • Right now the game is only announced for PC, which is why there is no Mac version for beta
  • Practice mode with bots and private game mode and you can set difficulty on the bots
  • No kill feed – but if it’s a highly requested feature it might make it in. They’re trying to keep the UI simple and not cluttered

The biggest debate has to be team composition. Mainly — you can have multiple of the same character and you can change which character you play as MID GAME. That being said, many people on the interwebs are not happy about this mechanic. I can see that… but how many times have you played Heroes and got outcomp’d by the enemy team? How many times do you wish you could go back and change your team selection?

I think the mechanic of character switching adds a huge new and refreshing dynamic to FPS Esports. It forces players to be versatile in their gameplay and be able to switch on the fly to counter enemy team comps. I can’t wait to see what happens in the future with the development and progression of teams forming and how the major names are going to address on the fly team comp changes.
