Overwatch Press Event Reactions

by - 9 years ago

The Overwatch event in which Blizzard invited a bunch of Youtube personalities (including some pro Team Fortess 2 players) happened on Thursday and it appears they have an embargo on the information they received that will lift on Friday morning during PAX East.

However, that hasn’t stopped them from being able to tell how the visit itself went and their thoughts on playing the game (without going into specifics). Probably the only bit of new information we did get is it was asked what the business model would be when the game was released and the developers responded with the same thing they did at BlizzCon, that they don’t know yet. However, in my opinion, it is likely we’ll be seeing some kind of free to play model since there is no single player campaign mode to sell.

Youtububer mrmuselks posted a Reddit thread with his experiences. He’s primarily a Team Fortress 2 player and said that he and others had reservations about Overwatch. After playing the game though, those worries went away. He was mainly surprised at the amount of depth in the game, especially when the pro TF2 players went up against the devs and got absolutely destroyed.

We setup a game of Overwatch devs vs us TF2 players that were invited (Star, Jerma, b4nny and me, along with 2 others). First up, we were COMPLETELY destroyed. Like, not even close, alot of them were on 10/20+ killstreaks and we never even capped a single point. I thought that with pretty large amounts of FPS experience we’d put up a decent fight, but it was basically just a slaughter. For me that really shows that there is a HUGE amount of depth and that this ISNT just another shooter. You really do need to understand the game and thats worth 10x just being able to click on someone.

There was this one moment in that game that really stuck with me. One of the devs was an INSANE widowmaker player, he was on a 15+ killstreak, I finally managed to sneak RIGHT behind him as tracer while he was up on a ledge. I started firing, as I did he immediately went to drop off the ledge onto the ground. I followed thinking that he was dead meat, as we were still falling he turned, hookshot BACK up to the ledge where I couldnt get him, turned, and headshot me as I hit the ground.

I just turned to the guy next to me and said ‘I just got so fucking outplayed’.

And THAT moment really sums up why im so damn excited for this game.

Another Youtuber, LevelCapGaming (known for Battlefield), posted a video about his thoughts as well. He also brought up the fact that the developers have been playing the heck out of their own game and show how much they love it as being optimistic about the future of the game.

There were probably 15-20 people who attended the event so I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about it next week. As a reminder, I will be at PAX East next week and will be trying to bring you as much info from the show floor as I can. Unfortunately, the Overwatch devs are all tied up by larger national press organizations so there was no room to fit us in for an interview for this game. We do however have a time set up on Saturday to check out the game on the show floor with a Blizzard representative.

Encouraging that the game is different enough from TF2 (as many have had the knee-jerk reaction that it looks very similar) that even the TF2 pros have to learn it mostly from scratch as well.
